And.... Six Months Later......

It has been SIX MONTHS since I posted ANYTHING. I can't believe how time flies. I have since gone back to work after fifteen years of being home full time. I am working limited part time teaching preschool and while I love it (most days), it keeps me busier than I thought it would. The nice part is that I am only gone while the kids are gone and I get home a few hours before them to catch up on the house and grocery shopping etc. I am grateful for a job that I can do and still be a full-time mom.

In other big news, Nick moved out to go to his first year of college at UVU. He has an apartment with some roommates, whom he didn't know ahead of time and he has a job at Finish Line at the mall. Marissa has been surviving her sophomore year and loving it.... and I mean every minute of it, including the early morning cheer practices. (Is she nuts or what? hahaha) Jack is happy in Jr. High. He is on the Student Council and loves being among friends at all times. He has had to adjust to 7 classes with 7 teachers and finally, now in the third term, has caught on to the concept that every teacher wants to be the priority. Shay is happy in 4th grade and loves her Intern Teacher Ms. Wayman. She likes going a few minutes early with Mom to do prep work in my preschool class. All is well with everyone as we plug along in our very busy lives. I will post a few pictures (or maybe a lot of pictures) to show you some highlights, vowing to do better on updating the blog in the near future. :)

During July, my Dad retired from Tesoro Oil Refinery. We had a party for him and everyone came to celebrate. While they were here, I managed to get a few photos of the cousins hanging out together, playing Chinese Human Ring Toss, shooting the bow, eating and just having a great time. We love it when the whole family comes together. And Congratulations again Dad... and best wishes for a happy retired life. We love you.

Fourth and Twenty Fourth of July

We have had an extremely eventful summer and one of our favorite parts is always the Fourth and Twenty Fourth of July. Marissa danced in the Stadium of Fire for the third year in a row. It was a wonderful experience with over 800 dancers involved. We saw the amazing fireworks that BYU presents. We also went to the Murray Parade with my parents. We went to the Spanish Fork Parade and the Rodeo, where we got rained out. And we went to the Spanish Fork parade, where the cheerleaders participated. Loved seeing their new uniforms. It was a really great July.

Priesthood Ordinations

into a different office of the Priesthood:

Nick, an Elder and Jack, a Deacon.

It was very special and memorable that they had their

ordinations on the same day.

With all of our happenings of this past spring, the biggest and most monumental occurrence was Nick's Graduation from High School. This is one of the fondest memories of a person's life and Nick celebrated big time in every way. While, it was difficult to put those wonderful days behind him, I know he is looking forward to a bright and amazing future too. We are very proud of Nick and all that he accomplished while in school. He is a fabulous athlete, good student, great friend and the best oldest son and brother in our family. We love him very much.

Nick has the greatest friends. We like them as much as he does and we will miss having them hang out here all the time as they all leave for college and missions.

Zach is the first friend that Nick met when we moved to Payson. He has always been very close to Nick. We just love him.

And Cassie, another great friend. They met in the 4th grade also. It's so nice that they've remained close through the years.

SPRING... Busy BUSY Spring!!!

This Spring was U L T R A B U S Y for our family.

We had prom, soccer, baseball, track meets, dance recitals, guitar recitals, graduations and the beginning of cheer practices. It is our "N O R M A L", but it was busy nonetheless.

Nick took Madison Poulson to Prom this year. She is a darling girl. It was fun to get to know her better and we hope he brings her around more in the future. He also had his best friends in his group and they all had a very fun time.

YOU LOOK VERY HANDSOME, NICK!!!

Jack continued his baseball playing with the South County Lynx. His hitting has improved including a home-run over the center field fence, and several doubles this year. He is quickly living up to the nickname "Jack Hammer". He plays outfield and second base and even got in a little time at catcher in the last season game where he tagged out the runner to clinch our win.

Shay played soccer for her second season. She really likes it. She seemed to play a lot of "goally", and we're not sure if this was by her choice or the coaches, but she did well there... learning a lot from Coach Camilla. She even scored a goal this year, which made her very happy.

WAY TO GO SHAY!!!

Nick finished his high school baseball career and had a great season. He had 0 errors at Centerfield. He batted over .500 in the playoffs and tallied the most stolen bases of the team. The Skyhawks finished their season in the State Playoffs literally minutes after their graduation ceremony (in fact, they had to leave graduation a little early.) Their heads were not in that game due to the tough circumstances. But they played well throughout the season and can hold their heads high as outstanding young men. GREAT ENDING TO A GREAT SEASON, NICK!!!

Marissa and Shaylee had their dance recital and they did a fantastic job and they both looked beautiful. Cindy is wonderful and they learn a lot and have so much fun with her and Carly and Cassie. They highlighted Marissa for making Cheer at Salem Hills. It was very nice.

Then they had their guitar recital. Miss Claudia said that they are her most advanced students and for this we had to chuckle, because they have only been taking a year. I was very impressed with how well they performed though. They even sang a duet and Marissa has threatened me to not put it on the blog. But it was very very good.

WAY TO SHINE GIRLS!!!

Shaylee had her first Hershey's Track Meet (Jack opted out of his this year... not his favorite thing.) She had a great time hanging out with some of her best friends and she took second in her heat the first time around. (She's in the grey with pigtails). She was happy to have done well.

GREAT EFFORT SHAY!!!

Jack graduated from Sixth Grade and completed Elementary School. The students performed a great program. They danced and sang and they were so cute. I loved seeing them having so much fun. The best part was when they sang Dream Big and they randomly held up signs stating what their dream was. It was so great. As his mom, I got a little choked up seeing my "not so little" boy getting so grown up. He has more amazing things ahead of him as he's starting Jr. High this fall.

And last, but not least... Marissa started her Cheer practices, which she absolutely loves even though they are at 6:00 a.m. nearly every morning this summer. She is doing great, learning a lot and getting to know and love her fellow cheerleaders. We are so excited to see so much more this fall as football season begins.

Spring Break 2011

This year for Spring Break, we decided to stay home. Shane had to work and we didn't have any big plans. However, after sticking around home for several days with "not-so-nice" Spring weather, we were bored... so we salvaged the week by taking a two day break.

On Friday, we went and played. We ate out at a yummy restaurant and went to Provo Beach Resort. It was super fun. The kids got to do a ropes course and we bowled. It was fun and I need to tell you that I WON bowling. I have rubbed it in my families' faces all week since. (In fact, I think they are getting tired of hearing it). But I was on fire (as the kid's would say). I actually bowled three strikes in a row at the very end which clinched the win. It was a lot of fun.

On Saturday, we decided to take a road trip. We went to Nevada to Lehman Caves. This is a bit of a drive, but so worth it. The cave is beautiful. And it was very fun to see. I had been there a few times as a child, but none of my kids had seen it and it was spectacular.

The best part of the entire week, though, was visiting my Dad's childhood home. My dad grew up in "the middle of nowhere".... really. I know a lot of people say that, but he truly did. His story is an incredible one and quite lengthy. The gist of it is that when he was four years old, his family moved to a very large ranch outside of Garrison, Utah. The nearest town of any size was about an hour and a half away with only spotted homes throughout the vast valley. He was schooled by his father in a one room school house and he was raised much of the time without electricity and running water. His childhood was much more like that of a pioneer, than the life of someone his young age.

As a child, I visited the ranch a handful of times, but no trip was or will ever be more memorable to me than this one. The home in which he lived has not been occupied for nearly 20 years and was in fact sold outside of the family several years ago. We drove to it and got permission from the new owner (who has built a new home nearby, which is the only home around for miles).

As we approached the property, a flood of memories came back to me. So many things that belonged to my Grandparents and my Dad are still at the ranch. Very few things have been hauled off. The house is dusty and somewhat damaged, but it was like stepping back in time. It was a wonderful experience, though a hard one. I felt so fortunate that my kids got to see where their Grandfather grew up and get a slice of his history. We were able to look over the dust and damage of the home and see a lovely glimpse into the life of my Grandmother, who was a talented, posh lady. I did not know her well, because she passed away when I was just 8. But she had made this small remote house in the middle of nowhere, a home. She had painted and created a lovely living space for her small family and I felt close to her seeing her handiwork and feeling her presence there. My Grandfather, who I knew much better as he passed away just three years ago at the age of 100, farmed and ranched the area and I was reminded of some of his life by being there also. I hope that my children and family will always remember this day and the special memory that it made to be there with my Dad. My words don't do justice to the feelings that I felt and still feel about the experience. I thank my Dad for sharing a distant part of his youth with all of us and making it a wonderful day to always remember.

The girls recently participated in the Salem Hills Cheer Clinic. It was a lot of fun for both of them. They performed dances which I recorded, but cannot get to download... so here's a photo of the two of them together. With their difference in age, there is not a lot that they do together right now, so we're grateful when a fun opportunity like this comes along.

Reese Comes to Visit!!!

My sister Lacey and her husband Chris came to Utah to visit

with their 3 month old daughter, who truly is a princess.

We spent almost the entire weekend with them and

still couldn't get enough of her (and them).

Reese is adorable and my kids were literally arguing

Skyhawk Basketkball

We are in the middle of the basketball season and it has been quite a year for the Skyhawks Team. Exciting, Wonderful, Stressful, Crazy, Sad, Upsetting, Cool and mostly fun.... and through it all we remain huge fans of this team, this school and this community. I've been taking some photos almost every game... but with my very limited photography skills, I'm happy when the local newspapers or another avenue provide me with some great shots of my basketball boy. Jack's King and Queen Ball

The sixth graders at Jack's school have been studying the Renaissance Era and they put on a King and Queen's ball to celebrate. They also learned etiquette and were taught the waltz. It was a really fun event and although the boys didn't really love the dancing part, it still turned out great. Not to mention that Jack had an adorable partner to dance with and great friends to "hang out" with. I am happy that he has great teachers to teach such important things.

Shaylee's Third Grade Christmas Program was scheduled for the last day of school before Christmas Break. Well, we received 15 inches of snow that morning and it was declared a SNOW DAY (the first in over 25 years in our school district.) Who knew? So, because of all the hard work and practice that went into the program, the great third grade teachers opted to do the Christmas Program in January. YAY!!! It was still a great program and I still felt the Christmas spirit. Here are some photos. Shay had a speaking part and also got to be a part of the dancing. It was adorable.

My beautiful new niece arrived and today, she is two weeks old. I haven't seen her in person, which is killing me. I had to post some photos to show her off a little bit. (I hope you don't mind Lacey and Chris.) I can't wait to meet her either at Christmas or shortly after. She's a little dolly.

Baby Nursery!!!

My sister is expecting her first baby,

a GIRL and we are all so excited.

This summer when she visited Utah,

she asked me to make some crib bedding.

Having never attempted anything like that before,

I was apprehensive, but because of my excitement for her,

we decided to tackle it.

She had the fabric already picked out

and she has amazing taste, so I knew it would

come together if I could complete the sewing part of it.

The quilt was within my comfort zone,

but the other items, including bumper pads,

dust ruffle, two curtains and pillows

were a little more of an issue.

In the end, it was so much fun

and I love the way it turned out.

With all of her adorable added touches of decor,

she has the cutest nursery.

We still anxiously await the baby,

but the room and the family are more than ready.

Fall Highlights

"Life comes at you fast"...

and this we know.

We have had a whirlwind Fall and here are some Highlights:

Nick made the basketball team again, (Wahoo), went to

Homecoming with Marisa S. and the Halloween Dance with Taylor S,

went to DC for Close Up, still found time to go Deer Hunting,

finished up his BYU Baseball League, took the ACT,

made the Honor Roll and continues to love Salem Hills High School.

He makes his Mom cry every time she remembers it's his Senior Year.

We are looking forward to seeing what his future holds,

but for now just loving being a part of his high school experiences.

You're awesome Nick. We're super proud of you.

Marissa finished up with Tennis, which she loves.

She injured her hand toward the end of the season.

We're still unsure whether it was broken or just a stress tear.

She is still Dancing and she's almost got her back-hand-spring down.

When the weather cooperates, she rides horses and helps

teach Horse Management lessons to some local students.

She got a 4.0 her first quarter that really counts, Freshman year.

She has loads of friends and loves hanging out with all of them.

Way to go Girl. You are amazing in every way.

Jack finished up Tackle Football and Lynx Baseball.

Both teams went far and he loved being a part of them.

He continues to draw and improves as an Artist rapidly.

He moved his bedroom upstairs and loves having his own "man cave."

His grades were super and his teacher says he's "Exceptional" at Math.

He likes Scouts, mostly due to having awesome scout leaders

and loves to go on the overnight camp-outs.

He went Pheasant Hunting in So. Dakota and saw Mt. Rushmore.

He's a fun, crazy kid and he always makes us smile.

We think you're SUPER cool, JackMan!!!

Shaylee finished up Soccer and Riding Lessons for now.

She's decided while she still loves horses, she's not ready to jump.

She is taking Guitar Lessons and Dance Class.

She is practicing to sing a solo at her Guitar Recital for Christmas.

She goes to Activity Days with her friends in our ward and

she just had her Daddy Daughter Party last week.

She got excellent grades and her teacher said she's a top reader.

She's spunky and doesn't like to be called the baby, but she is.

You're a Great girl, Shay. We're so proud of you.

Nick's Trip to DC

Nick had the opportunity to attend the Close Up Program in Washington DC during November. It was a trip with ten boys and ten girls from Salem Hills, along with his favorite teacher and JV Basketball Coach, Mr Griffin. Shane's Parents recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary and we all wanted to celebrate with them, so we took a Carribean Cruise. There were 24 of us including the 2 of them, 9 of their children, 7 children's spouses, 5 grandchildren and a granddaughter's boyfriend. Can you say, CRAZY? It was that, but we really had a great time. Unfortunately.. this is the only photo that I can add. Shane took most of the photos and they are lost in media world somewhere.

Labor Day Weekend

Here's how we spent it:

Shaylee sang in the Onion Days Talent Show!!!

She did a super job. She sang a'capella and the judges

were very impressed mentioning how well she stayed on key

and that she had great stage presence.

Way to go, little Diva!

Jack played Baseball. He did great and his highlights were

hitting a triple RBI and then scoring,

which means he had a hand in the only two runs scored

against a really tough team.

He also hit a hard double during the next game that the Lynx won.

Marissa rode in a horse show. She did fantastic.
She had a smile on her face almost the entire time.

She took a third place and sixth place ribbon.

We are very proud of her for literally "getting back in the saddle"

after taking a nearly two year break from showing.

And Nick also played baseball, for his BYU Prospect league.
He played really well. Hitting all three times up to bat.
One line drive base hit, the other two were a hard line drive
getting to first, but on fielding error and the other
a massive bomber out to the center field. Big hits on a big field.

We are so thrilled that everyone is happy and healthy and
able to participate in the things they love and enjoy.
We LOVE this time of year.

We have had a whirlwind of a summer and now everyone is back to school and routine. I have not been able to post anything because my dear camera was dropped in a muddy puddle while on Trek and I have not yet replaced it. I have a bunch of fun photos taken on Nick's camera that detail our summer adventures. However, we don't currently have a cord to download those either. When we get our act together, we'll be back. :)

Marissa had the opportunity to dance at Stadium of Fire again this year. It was so much fun. She puts a lot of time and effort into the practices through all of June and we are thankful to her cute dance teachers: Cindy and Carly for all they do to make this happen. Trek Experience

Shane and I had the opportunity to be "Ma and Pa" this year with our Stake's Trek. While we were hesitant about the whole experience in the beginning, we are so grateful we got to be a part of it. I came across this photo of Shane's family and had to share it. It's classic. As near as I can tell, judging by everyone's ages, it was taken approximately 28 years ago, either right before or right after Randy's mission. I love it. 5th Grade Recognition Night

Jack had his Fifth Grade Recognition Night. Fifth Grade is a "BIG" year for testing and academic growth, so they always celebrate the kids accomplishments at a "Graduation-type" event at the end of the year. Jack had a great year with Mrs. P, as his teacher and with most of his closest friends in his class. He was one of 15 students to make the Honor Roll, which requires completing 11 extra projects and service activities throughout the year. Great Job Jack!!

Jack recently had his turn at the Fifth Grade Wax Museum. This is something that each of our 5th Graders has got to experience. It's so much fun. At the beginning of the year, they choose a state to study and report on. The report takes a good part of the first semester. They then choose a historical person from that state to portray in the Wax Museum. Jack had the state of North Carolina and chose Orville Wright (one of the Wright Brothers), as his portrayal.

We think he looked awesome. Good Job Jack!!!

California Dreamin'

Our FAMILY took a fairly last minute "ROAD TRIP" to California over SPRING BREAK. A few weeks ago, we discovered that none of the kids had any games, recitals, concerts, lessons, ANYTHING that they had to be to over the break. This, in and of itself, was cause for Celebration. So, we decided to head to California for some SUN and FUN. We started out in SAN FRANCISCO with our really good friends The Chisholms. It's a BEAUTIFUL city with very fun things to see and do. We visited Alcatraz, Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge and Park, Muir Wood National Forest and many other sites. Next we headed south on the PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY, stopping at Pebble Beach Golf Resort and some very "out of the way" spots that were literally on the very western tip of our great nation. We spent several days in Anaheim and visited DISNEYLAND and went to an ANGELS Baseball game. We truly had a great time as a family and loved spending some quality time together. The other night, after a particularly busy day, Shay came to me and said she had a terrible headache. She wanted to know what would help her feel better. After giving her some suggestions, none of which she was that fond of, she said, "I know... I need a bubble bath with candles." So here she is basking in the glow of the best cure ever. She giggled all the way through it and quickly forgot about her headache. The cutest part was that she kept repeating things like "Nothin' wrong with this" and "I'm tellin' ya, this is the life." She is a little character for sure, but she brings a bright spot to our lives, everyday!!!

I'm No Cake Boss

I love watching Cake Boss. I can't believe the amazing cakes that they create and it intrigues me to see what they will come up with next. It's one of the few shows that I actually bother to DVR.

This week, I was asked to bake and decorate a round cake for the RS Birthday Dinner. I am not a great cake decorator and took this as a reluctant challenge. I decided to try "fondant" for the very first time ever. Whoa... what was I thinking.

Here is the finished result. The fondant actually worked fairly well. But as you can see, my actual decorating skills are in need of some improvement. I'm hoping the Lemon Poppy Seed cake inside will taste better than it looks on the outside. Oh well... here's to new attempts at creating.

Jack's 5th Grade Talent Show

Over the Christmas break, my brother Ryan took some family photos for us. This is one of my favorite. I am so happy to have this picture with all of them. My brothers, Ryan and Brady and sister Lacey have all moved away from Utah. They come to visit fairly often (2-3 times a year generally), but it's not very often that we are all together except at Christmas. Even though they are far away in distance, I am grateful that we are close otherwise. I love you guys!!!

Reality Bites - Laundry

So, my first reality is that I have sooooo much laundry. I know, wah wah wah. It's not that I have that many children... because many families have more. But seriously, boy do I have laundry? First, having a teenage son involved in two sports at one time. That in itself generates so much laundry. First, we have the baseball practice at 5:30 in the morning and the baseball gear. Then a quick shower at school and a dirty towel gets thrown into the mix. Next comes school clothes, which quite often consists of a shirt and tie, as the Basketball coach requires "dressing up" on game days. This is a nice thing actually. No complaining here. It's so nice to see your teenage son in a shirt and tie because it's an honor and not because they have to. Next is the Basketball clothes which wardrobe rivals any NBA player. There are the uniforms (home and away), the warm-ups, the practice clothes, the traveling sweats... ... Whoa, there is a lot. Lastly, there are the 6 pair of socks that come home each day. Why 6? I'm not really sure. But let me tell you that when the enormous duffle bag gets carried into my laundry room on a daily basis, there is enough dirty laundry in there to keep even a Central Manhattan Laundromat in business. :) Well, I think you get the idea. Now consider that this is only one child and he probably is my most severe laundry offender, but still!! I have three other children and a husband who also generate a large amount of laundry. Cleaning stalls in the mornings requires entirely different clothing than working out or working at the office and then there is the nightly lounging attire and so on and so on. You get it. I know you get it. Some of you anyway. If you ever can't find me, I'm sure I'm lost in the vastness of sorting, washing, drying or folding. Catch me there while you are in your own reality.

Blogging and Reality "Bites"

I've been hearing a lot lately about all the blogging that SAHM's are doing and getting paid for. (And in case your not a true blogger - SAHM stands for "Stay At Home Mother" -- and that took me quite some time to figure out. lol). Anyway, they solicit people to their blog, try to get advertising, compete in the whole blogging world and blah blah blah. And they are able to do it in the comfort of their own home, in their pajamas if they so choose. I'm SO not interested in that. In fact, I'm not that fond of pajamas. Too informal. (wink) The sole purpose of my blog is to remember the everyday moments of our little family's life and maybe share with just a few close friends and family what's going on with us. I did however think of something that I'm going to try... Reality "Bites". Every once in a great while, there are these little thoughts that I have that I want to record or remember. I tried Facebooking. (Sigh)... but I'm not so impressed with that. Too public. Also, too much of a time waster for me. My teenagers like it and I can see it's real benefits to re-connect and stay in touch, so for any of you that are on FB, please don't be offended and by all means, proceed as usual. Certainly don't let my opinion shape you. But I want to share little tidbits with you this way instead. I know that some days you will relate and somedays, probably not... but here's to my reality. :)

I'm back again with another Thankful Thursday. I instituted this a long time ago and was able to keep it up for awhile, but then life happened and I quit. I want to come back because being thankful is very important to me. And... today, I am thankful for
The February Thaw ... I love the warmer temperatures and little bouts of sunshine that let us know that Spring is right around the corner.

Also, I am thankful for my walking shoes. I have been walking (or Trek Training) for a few weeks now and I am thankful for my walking shoes that fit well and don't hurt my feet. As my husband would tell you, I don't always choose the most comfortable or sensible shoes, but these I love.

Most of Marissa's Christmas gifts this year consisted of items to re-decorate her room. We're almost finished and couldn't wait to share some photos. She LOVES it. It is so fun and girly.

It's a great place for her to dance, listen to music and practice the guitar. While we were sad to say goodbye to the cherry tree that previously adorned her wall, this is definitely a fun "new room".

Our Friends from Mexico!!!

I have wanted to blog this for awhile and keep forgetting. Our family has developed a fun new friendship with a family from Mexico. Jack started out as friends with their son at school. Then Shaylee met one of their other little boys. Next, Marissa became acquainted with their daughter. It all happened unknowingly to each other. After a little while, they moved to another area of Payson and the children began going to different schools than my kids. I thought our friendship may end there. However, to their credit and not my doing, they soon were calling to play and bringing our family treats and the best tamales in the whole entire world. We returned the treats and we exchanged Christmas gifts. The kids have gone to a few of their birthday parties and family gatherings. They are a wonderful family. They are so kind and cheerful and giving. We have grown to love them. While the parents don't speak fluent english, we are able to converse with their children translating for us. I am so grateful for our friendship with them and grateful that true friendship can defy cultural and language barriers. I hope to get to know them even better in the coming year.

Christmas Performances

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas at our house,

especially because we've been to some festive performances lately.

First, Shaylee had her Christmas Dance Recital. It is a darling, small recital that we enjoy every year.

We love Miss Cindy and Miss Carli. They are wonderful and so fun.

Next, Marissa had her Choir Concert. They did a great job. Miss McCune (the Director) is very talented and chooses wonderful music for the kids to perform. We love it.

Lastly, Shaylee had her "mini" performance of The Polar Express.

She was the train conductor and she was fantastic. We think she is destined to be on stage.

Congrats to both girls for great performances and for helping to bring about some Christmas cheer.

Skyhawk Basketball

Nick is on the Salem Hills Basketball team for the second year. He plays point guard. His team recently spent a weekend in St. George playing back to back to back games with some Southern Utah teams. They did well, winning only one of the three in JV and two of the three for Varsity. ALL the games were close and it was a great experience. Nick got to play a few minutes of the Varsity game and scored his first Varsity points, a 3 pointer to tie up the game. We were excited for him. He played well overall and had a fun time. Our family loves Skyhawk Basketball and we are really proud of Nick.

Shane and I had a wonderful vacation in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. The weather was amazing and we enjoyed spending some rest and relaxation together celebrating 20 years of marriage. Oh, and the food, YUM... it was amazing too. While there, we parasailed 350 feet above the Atlantic, snorkeled and saw a 3 1/2 foot Barracuda and drove a sport boat through the mangrove trees. We also visited Tulum Mayan Ruins and were told by our "LDS" tour guide that it was believed to be where the Lamanites resided. Very interesting. The night we came home, the snow began and we now have 13 inches to contend with. We love it too though... because now it feels like Christmas... and there's no place like home for the holidays.

Marissa had her Young Women in Excellence last night. It was a talent show and they gave out the "Emma Awards". Each girl prepared a display or talent to share. The girls wore formal dresses and it was really a nice evening. Marissa shared her talent of Horse Riding. She told about the different styles of riding English and showed pictures and a few of her blue ribbons. She did a fantastic job and she looked beautiful. Great Job Miss!! You are talented in so many ways.

Good Women

I thought about someone today. It came randomly as I was preparing dinner and listening to Shaylee read. A woman that I once knew and the impact that she had on teaching her children the importance of reading. Geri Hillstead... she was a Bishop's wife, a mother of, I don't know, 7-8. She was a good woman. She had cancer. She was raising a nice family amidst a terrible disease. I remember, barely knowing her, but standing in line with her at the school book fair. She was thin and sickly. She was determined, when she could have easily been preoccupied. She wanted her son to be driven to read. She scoured the books on the tables to find something that would interest Hank, something he would want to read. I don't think I gave it much thought then....but now, years later....8-9 years later, I am touched by her example of motherhood. Geri died. I heard from other neighbors about her death a few years ago. Hank grew up. I would guess he is in his twenties now. I'm sure he reads....and all because of a mother that desired to be a good mother. I feel inspired by her example today. If she did it, I will try to do it too.

Today is Shane's 40-something birthday. (42nd, actually) Shane is the fourth child of eleven, born to Golden and Leila Obray. He was born in Grand Junction, Colorado. He is one of seven sons. Shane has many hobbies, but generally work comes first for him. He works very, very hard and is a borderline work-a-holic. He is extremely driven and has huge amounts of determination and self-motivation and can accomplish anything he sets his mind to. When he's not working, he's playing for sure. His motto is Work Hard, Play Hard. His hobbies include Hunting, his Harley and Horses. (probably in that order) He also loves baseball and although his playing days are over for the most part, he loves coaching little league and especially enjoys watching both of his boys play baseball. In the last few years, Shane has found a love of traveling and we have been fortunate to go to some really amazing places. Whether it's on a Caribbean Cruise or to Europe, he has found a way to relax (at least for a week or two out of the year). Shane is a wonderful husband and provider for our family. He is an amazing father and he loves his four kids with all his heart. His girls are "Daddy's Girls" for sure and his boys' look up to him in so many ways. I am grateful that he was taught how to work from an early age by good parents and grateful that he is teaching our kids how to work also. His strength and fortitude are key to who he is, but he definitely has a soft "teddy bear" side to him. Happy Birthday Dinger!! We love you very much. Hope you have a great day!!!

I spent an extended weekend in Northern VA and DC visiting my brother and sister. It was a great trip. In the city, we had lunch and dinner and shopped in Georgetown. I got to see my brother's awesome apartment. It's in a great area close to so many historical, cool sites. Because this wasn't my first trip there, we didn't do a lot of the "touristy" things and I didn't get a lot of pictures. Instead, we just enjoyed his neighborhood, the cool fall temperatures and took our time visiting and hanging out. In Virginia, I stayed at Lacey and Chris' home in Fairfax. It is so darling. They have recently remodeled so much of their house and it is great. We also went to the Waterford Fair. Waterford is an amazing little Virginia town. You feel as though you have stepped back in time and it was a lovely day. The exhibitors have amazing crafts for sale and the entire atmosphere was incredible.

Shane and the boys have again spent the majority of their September hunting. Shane went every weekend during the month and Nick and Jack were able to go two different times with him.

Shane's new adventure this year was a 10-day Elk Hunt to New Mexico. It was a long drive, but he liked seeing new country and getting away from work for a few weeks.

During the muzzle loader hunt, Nick shot this 3-pt on the last night.

but I think my handsome boys are the real "Trophy."

Shaylee is participating in a Riding Club this fall. It has been very fun for her so far. Unlike Marissa's interest in English riding, Shaylee is all "Cowgirl" and wants to ride Western. A few neighbors and I started this club and we have 8 Junior Riders. JoJo and Kelly teach, while I provide the arena and refreshments. It's worked out quite nicely so far. The best part is that it's 100 yards out my back door. No trailering horses ... not yet anyway.

Shaylee sang at the Golden Onion Days Talent Show over Labor Day Weekend. She did awesome. She was very nervous in the morning before we went over, but once we arrived, she took on a whole different demeanor and attitude. Note the photo above. We are very proud of her and think she did an amazing job. I can't get the video to upload because it's too long....but it really was great. She loved it and she's already planning for next year.

From the look on their faces, can you tell the outcome of the game?

Jack is on this new baseball team and he is loving it. He plays 2nd Base and he has had some great plays so far. He also hit an "in the park" home-run at this last game. The coach from the opposing team told him afterward that it was the farthest hit that he has seen from a kid in this age group. They played on the High School softball field and the ball went over third base and clear to the fence. Great Job Jack!!!

Nick's Truck

I finally found a moment to stop Nick in his track's and take a picture of him with his new truck. He has had it for a couple of months...but has been running (or in this case) driving off in many different directions this summer. We think the truck is great and fits him just right.

Harves River Camping Trip

We had a blast on our camping trip. My sister and her husband came from Virginia, along with my parents, cousins, aunt, uncle AND my 89 year old grandfather. It was wonderful being all together in the beautiful mountains. The highlight of the entire weekend was watching my Grandpa play the harmonica. One of my favorite memories from childhood was listening to him play around the campfire on our camping trips. I was so touched that my children got to experience it firsthand from their Grandpa Great. Truly awesome. We love you Grandpa and we had a great time.

As sporadic as they have been lately, here's another Thankful Thursday.

I AM THANKFUL......

...for a 2 hour phone conversation with my sister yesterday. She is great and I miss her.

...that I can still hold my youngest child on my lap during movies when she's scared. She (and all the kids) need to stop growing up so fast.

...for zucchini and cucumbers that our garden is producing this year. Delicious.

...for time in the summer to do "nothing" and enjoy our home and family.
